What defines opioid addiction? 

Opioid addiction is characterised by a powerful, compulsive urge to use opioid drugs, even when they are no longer required medically. Opioids have a high potential for causing addiction in some people, even when the medications are prescribed appropriately and taken as directed. 

The danger of opioid addiction? 

Pharmaceutical drugs when taken orally filter through the liver, and overuse of medication (opioids in particular) can potentially cause liver toxicity.  

Signs of liver toxicity

• Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice)
• Itching.
• Abdominal pain in the upper right portion of the abdomen.
• Fatigue.
• Loss of appetite.
• Nausea and vomiting.
• Rash.
• Fever.

Liver toxicity can cause liver cancer.

How can CBD help?

Some studies—both preclinical animal and human clinical trials—suggest CBD could be used to help treat people who are dependent on opioids.

In one such study, researchers administered CBD to people with heroin use disorder. Over the course of a week, CBD significantly reduced heroin users’ cue-induced cravings, withdrawal anxiety, resting heart rate, and salivary cortisol levels. No serious adverse effects were found.

Other studies find CBD helpful in reducing various psychiatric and medical symptoms like anxiety, insomnia, and pain in patients with substance use disorders, indicating that CBD can be an effective treatment for opioid addiction.
